Born in Hong Kong, Stephen Yip now lives in the USA. He received his DMA from Rice University and BFA from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. His mentors have included Law Wing-fai, Clarence Mak, Arthur Gottschalk and Ellsworth Milburn. He has received several composition prizes including the Salvatore Martirano Memorial Composition Award, Haifa International Composition Prize and Prize from the Debussy Trio Music Foundation.
Yip has attended many contemporary music festivals and conferences including Wellesley Composers Conference, Aspen Music Festival, Asian Composers’ League, ISCM World Music Days, Chinese Composers’ Festival, Darmstadt International Summer Course for New Music in Germany, Music X, June in Buffalo, IMPULS Ensemble Akademie, California EAR Unit’s Composer Seminar and workshops in the Czech Republic and Luxembourg. Residencies include the Atlantic Center for the Arts, Florida; Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, Nebraska; Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Yaddo Colony, New York and the MacDowell Colony, New Hampshire.
Yip’s works have been performed in the USA, Canada, Costa Rica, Israel, Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Germany, Italy, Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and the Philippines, and were released by various record labels including ERMMedia, PARMA Recordings, Capstone, North/South Recordings, Ablaze Records, ATMA Classique and Beauport Classical.
Yip is a member of the SCI, NACUSA and ASCAP and is currently on the music faculty of Houston Community College.
