“Love conquers all…
The original inspiration to the box office hit of “Frozen”, The Snow Queen follows Gerda on her quest to save her best friend Kai.

Once upon a time, an evil troll created a magic mirror that shattered into millions of tiny shards. These shards contained the power to change a person’s heart from one that is loving and kind, to one that is mean and cruel. They floated freely through the air and entered people’s eyes and eventually pierced their hearts.

In a small village, Gerda and Kai listen attentively to Gerda’s Grandma as she tells them the story of the Snow Queen. As they listen, Kai looks out the window and is suddenly pierced with a shard of evil mirror. It transforms him immediately into a cruel little boy and he no longer wants to be friends with Gerda and loses interest in village life.

When the Snow Queen takes Kai, Gerda decides to go on a journey to save her best friend. On her journey, she meets many mentors that help her in her quest; a group of silly birds, Garden Woman and her flowers, Lily and Hyacinth, Mr. and Mrs. Crow, the Prince and the Princess, the Robber Girl and her gang of robbers, the Lapp Woman and Reindeer. After many challenges and temptations, Gerda finally makes her way to the Snow Queen’s palace. She finds Kai in the palace but Kai does not recognize his best friend. He is under a spell. Gerda’s love eventually overcomes the Snow Queen’s spell, thaws Kai’s heart and her tears wash away the evil shards of mirror that have pierced his eyes. Kai finally comes out of his trance and remembers not only Gerda but his original nature as well.

The APPRECIATE concerts are, mainly, classical concerts featuring guest artists and conductors of world renown.  Apart from performing orchestral masterpieces, Hong Kong Sinfonietta regularly commissions new works and introduces to audiences works that are rarely heard in Hong Kong.

Music is good for everyone! The LEARN series takes audiences aged 0 to 88 into the world of classical music through specially designed concert series including Good Music for Babies, Good Music for Kids, Short-cut to Classical Music, Know Your Classical Music and HKS McDull Music Project.

In the light-hearted RELAX concerts, Hong Kong Sinfonietta shares with audiences great music ranging from orchestral favourites to music from movies and musicals.

The ENCOUNTER series offers unique opportunities for audiences to get close to the music and the performers through chamber music concerts, talks, often at unconventional venues or time. These include Good Music This Lunch, Good Music @ The Fringe, Beyond Good Music @ The Fringe, HKS ArtisTree Residency and UpClose Encounters.

Often referred to as “one of the world’s great small orchestras”, Hong Kong Sinfonietta has been invited to go on many TOURS in Europe, Asia, South and North Americas, sharing good music with audiences in over 30 cities.  In 2017/2018, the orchestra will make its début in Germany and perform at festivals in France, Portugal, as well as the Beethoven Easter Festival in Poland.

WHAT ELSE?  Apart from classical concerts, Hong Kong Sinfonietta regularly appears in staged productions by Hong Kong Ballet, Opera Hong Kong and visiting arts groups such as The Royal Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Bolshoi Ballet and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. This season, Hong Kong Sinfonietta will also host the 1st International Conducting Competition.
