Chan Yiu-wing
Principal Tuba
Chan Yiu-wing joined Hong Kong Sinfonietta as Principal Tuba in 2024. He has been a student of Anne Jelle Visser since 2021 at the Zurich University of the Arts, where he received his master’s degree in Music Performance (Concert Performance) under the support of Bernard van Zuiden Music Fund, and where he is currently studying for a master’s degree in Specialised Music Performance (Soloist).
During his time in Switzerland, Chan held a tuba internship with the Berner Symphonieorchester (2022-2023). He has performed with the Verbier Festival Orchestra, Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonia Zürich, Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Sinfonieorchester Liechtenstein, under the baton of renowned conductors such as Gianandrea Noseda, Charles Dutoit, Krzysztof Urbański, Markus Stenz and Marc Albrecht.
Chan started learning the tuba at the age of 13 with Lam Wing-tsan and played in the symphonic band of his secondary school in Hong Kong. He then continued his studies with Lam at the Hong Kong Baptist University, where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in Tuba Performance and Pedagogy with First Class Honours. He also studied with renowned tuba players including Roland Szentpáli, Sérgio Carolino, Tim Buzbee, Paul Luxenberg, Mike Forbes and Charles Villarrubia.
