Lu Shang-cong
Principal Flute
Lu Shang-cong began his systematic training in the flute in 2008, studying under distinguished flautists both in China and abroad. His early foundation in the instrument was established with Qiu Wei-guo, former flautist of the Shenyang Military Region Song and Dance Troupe. He then studied with Ni Yi-zhen from the China Conservatory of Music, and received further mentorship from Thomas von Lüdinghausen, Principal Flute of the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra.
Lu completed his undergraduate studies at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold in Germany, studying the flute with Hans-Jörg Wegner, while concurrently studying the piccolo with Martin Glück of the Universität der Künste Berlin. He obtained his master’s degree from the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, studying under Andrea Lieberknecht and further honing his command of Austro-German and contemporary repertoire.
Lu’s technical mastery and expressive musicality have been recognised at several major international competitions, winning Second Prize at the Domenico Cimarosa International Flute Competition in Italy, and First Prize at the International Theobald Böhm Competition in Germany. In 2022, he was a semi-finalist at the Kobe International Flute Competition in Japan, receiving high praise from the jury.
Lu currently serves as Principal Flute of Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and remains active as a soloist and chamber musician.
