Sound Palette: Painting a Better World
Have you ever thought of a symphony orchestra as a big palette of sound – one which can turn pitches and timbres into music and colour?
Sounds become music when it is designed to engender meaning. Every piece of music therefore, has the potential to be a picturesque story, with emotions and feelings. Sometimes the music tells one simple story but other times, it involves more than one story – with mixed sentiments. Sometimes the story creates an emotional roller coaster but other times, the emotions can be vague and without clear direction.
Once the composer paints the story, the conductor and the orchestral musicians – and sometimes with soloists – collaborate to realise the story together. They will generate the sounds which form emotions. The interesting thing about this mixture is that, even with the same sound palette made up of identical artists, every time the story is told, it is somehow different. So throughout the centuries, works by master composers have been recreated and enjoyed afresh over and over again, with new colours and perspectives. Today, we continue with the same process with young composers, hoping that one day, the stories of the world today – with the distinctive emotions and voices of our times – can carry on into the future.
Apart from our concerts at our partner venue, the Hong Kong City Hall, we will also be extending our reach to new audiences with our new “Out of the Blue” series, and rekindling our relationship with our cinema partner MOViE MOViE for new collaborations.
Life is filled with all kinds of stories and emotions. We hope that with our special sound palette, we will be able to bring you into our world of colours and emotions, with stories which we can reflect on, reminisce and envisage, for a better world.
