Chris Choi
Viola

Born in Hong Kong, Chris Choi Shu-lun began studying the violin at the age of six and took up the viola at seventeen. He trained under Wang Jiayang and Ivan Chan at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, where he completed his Master of Music degree with full scholarships. Chris has been awarded numerous scholarships, including the Y. S. Liu Foundation Scholarship, the SAR Philharmonic Scholarship, the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Scholarship for Outstanding Merit, and the ABRSM Scholarship. He has also participated in masterclasses and private lessons with artists such as Yuri Bashmet, Steven Tenenbom, and Roberto Díaz.

First Prize winner of the Alice and Eleonore Schoenfeld 1st International String Competition (Chamber Music Division). He has taken part in several prestigious international programs, including the McGill International String Quartet Academy in Montreal, the Aspen Music Festival in the United States, and the Chilingirian Chamber Music Festival in the United Kingdom, where he performed as a guest artist with the Miami String Quartet.

In addition, Choi participated in the New York String Orchestra Seminar at Carnegie Hall and the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo. He was a member of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra from 2018 to 2023.

His other notable performances include Walton’s Viola Concerto and Forsyth’s Viola Concerto with the Academy Symphony Orchestra, as well as solo appearances at the ABRSM Prize Ceremony Presentations in 2014, 2015, and 2016.

Currently, Choi serves as a violin and viola tutor for the Junior Music Programme at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and works as a chamber music coach at the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK).
