Ramón Ortega Quero
Oboe
Winner of the First Prize at ARD International Music Competition in 2007 and two ECHO KLASSIK Awards (2011, 2012), Ramón Ortega Quero is recognized around the world as one of the most promising musicians of his generation. Since 2008, he has been Principal Oboe of Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under Principal Conductor Mariss Jansons, and has worked with renowned conductors including Riccardo Muti, Herbert Blomstedt, Colin Davis, John Eliot Gardiner, Daniel Barenboim, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Bernhard Haitink.
As a soloist, Ortega Quero has collaborated with Konzerthausorchester Berlin, MDR Sinfonieorchester, NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, Sinfonieorchester Basel, Zürich, Vienna and Munich Chamber Orchestras, and São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, among others. In chamber music, he has performed in the concert series in Vienna, Salzburg, Baden-Baden, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Berlin, Hannover, Cologne, Valencia and Vancouver. He has also appeared at Lucerne, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Rheingau and Heidelberger Frühling Music Festivals as well as other international festivals in Gstaad and Jerusalem. His chamber music partners include Janine Jansen, Mitsuko Uchida, Guy Braunstein, Tabea Zimmermann, Elena Bashkirova and Kit Armstrong.
As a “Rising Star” selected by the European Concert Hall Organization in 2010/2011, Ortega Quero has performed at the most important concert halls in Vienna, Salzburg, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Brussels and Luxembourg. He made his Carnegie Hall début in 2015/2016, and went on an extended tour with Prague Philharmonia as well as performing in Japan. In 2015, Ortega Quero gave the world première of Oscar Navarro’s Legacy, an oboe concerto dedicated to him.
Highlights in 2016/2017 included the concerts with Konzerthausorchester Berlin under Iván Fischer and with Scottish Chamber Orchestra under Robin Ticciati in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Other highlights include the return visits to Munich Chamber Orchestra and Kammerakademie Potsdam, as well as the collaborations with National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra and Hong Kong Sinfonietta in Asia. Apart from orchestral performances, he appears in different chamber music ensembles at such festivals as Rheingau, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Mosel and Moritzburg, as well as festivals in Luxemburg and Hamburg.
Ortega Quero’s début CD Shadows, released on Solo Musica in 2010, won the ECHO KLASSIK “Newcomer of the Year” award in 2011. The following year, he received ECHO KLASSIK “Chamber Music Recording of the Year” together with Sebastian Manz, Marc Trénel, David Fernández Alonso and Herbert Schuch. He recorded two other albums with Kammerakademie Potsdam and pianist Kateryna Titova respectively, while his latest CD featuring Bach’s oboe sonatas was released on EDEL in 2015.
Ortega Quero received solid training from Miguel Quirós early on at the conservatory of his native city of Granada. He became a member of Andalusian Youth Orchestra at 12, and was accepted by Daniel Barenboim as a member of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra in 2003. Ortega Quero was a winner of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship in 2010.
