Bass-baritone and conductor Apollo Wong has sung major roles in opera productions including Britten’s Albert Herring and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Handel’s Serse, Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, Puccini’s Turandot and La Bohème, Bizet’s Carmen, Rossini’s Il Viaggio a Reims, Mozart’s Così Fan Tutte, among others. He was also featured in the Hong Kong Arts Festival’s world première productions of Heart of Coral and Datong by Chan Hing-yan, as well as Before Brabant by Jeffrey Ching. His concert and oratorio repertoire includes Bach’s St John and St Matthew Passions, Beethoven’s Symphony No 9, Brahms’ German Requiem, Fauré’s Requiem, Mahler’s Symphony No 8, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Mozart’s Requiem and Puccini’s Messa di Gloria. He has collaborated with conductors including Paolo Olmi, Renato Palumbo, Joseph Rescigno, Helmuth Rilling and François-Xavier Roth.
Wong has won First Prize at Palm Springs Opera Guild Vocal Competition and the Pasadena Opera Guild Vocal Scholarship, and made his European début at La Fenice Sale Apollinee, Venice, Italy. He has been chorus master for conductors including Lorin Maazel, Helmuth Rilling and Edo de Waart; assistant conductor to Bruno Aprea in Opera Hong Kong’s (OHK) La Bohème; and conductor of OHK’s Summer Opera Camp productions of The Magic Flute and The Pirates of Penzance.
Currently Music Director of The Learners Chorus and Orchestra, Wong has also conducted Hong Kong Philharmonic and was Music Director of Hong Kong Youth Choir and OHK Children’s Chorus.
