Violin
Taiwanese-American violinist Richard Lin continues to gain international prominence since winning the Gold Medal at the 2018 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, having also amassed a collection of top prizes at major international competitions including 1st Prize at the Sendai International Violin Competition, 3rd Prize in the Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition in Hannover, and 2nd Prize at the Singapore and Michael Hill International Violin competitions. Following his June 2022 Carnegie Hall Stern Auditorium recital début, New York Concert Review asserted, “Richard Lin. Remember the name. For he has everything required to take the world by storm.”
Lin’s 2024/2025 season included appearances as soloist with the esteemed Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and The Phoenix Symphony, Sichuan Symphony Orchestra, Yamagata Symphony and major orchestras in Taiwan. He will also appear in recitals in Poland and throughout the USA, including performances with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.
As a soloist, Lin has collaborated with orchestras at celebrated concert venues throughout the world, such as in Europe with the NDR Radiophilharmonie, Munich Chamber Orchestra, Royal Chamber Orchestra of Wallonia, Polish Baltic Philharmonic, Łódź Philharmonic, Amadeus Polish Radio Chamber Orchestra, Poznań Philharmonic; in the USA with Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, New Mexico Philharmonic, Oklahoma City Philharmonic; and in Asia with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, Sendai Philharmonic, Nagoya Philharmonic, Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa, Yokohama Sinfonietta, Taiwan Philharmonic, Taipei Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Macau Strings Association.
Lin’s discography includes the recently released Journey with pianist Thomas Hoppe on the Azica label, featuring Lin’s Carnegie Hall programme with works by Vitali, Richard Strauss, John Corigliano, Frolov and Debussy. He has an album on the Fontec label featuring works for violin and orchestra by Beethoven, Bartók and Brahms with the Sendai Philharmonic and conductor Pascal Verrot. He also recorded the complete Brahms Sonatas for Piano and Violin with his brother, pianist Robert Lin.
Born in Phoenix, Arizona and raised in Taiwan, Lin began his violin studies at the age of four. He made his public début aged 11, performing Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto No 3 with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra. He graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music and The Juilliard School, where he studied with Aaron Rosand and Lewis Kaplan respectively. Now also a dedicated teacher, Lin is on the faculty of the Taipei University of Education. He currently plays on a 2022 Samuel Zygmuntowicz violin which was specially made for him.
