US/UK composer Geoffrey Gordon’s contributions to the contemporary music repertoire are marked by intense and luxuriant harmony, passionate melody and superb handling of instrumentation and sonic textures. His music has been called “darkly seductive” (New York Times), “complex, richly-satisfying” (BBC Music Magazine) and “luminous and ecstatic” (Gramophone).
Gordon has worked with and been commissioned by many of the finest ensembles in the world, including the Cleveland Orchestra, Philharmonia, BBC Philharmonic, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic, Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, Brussels Philharmonic, Copenhagen Philharmonic, Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, JACK Quartet, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players and International Contemporary Ensemble. His chamber music has been premiered worldwide, including at the Carnegie Hall, Vienna Schoenberg Center, Tokyo Hakuju Hall and London St John’s Smith Square. In 2021/2022, cellist Benedict Kloeckner released on CD and premiered a new solo commission at the Berlin Philharmonie, Alte Oper Frankfurt and Carnegie Hall. In 2022, Gordon was commissioned to write a work for organ solo as part of Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee commemoration at Coventry Cathedral. A new song cycle commissioned for baritone Jacques Imbrailo was premiered at the Oxford Lieder Festival.
Gordon has twice served as composer-in-residence at the Aaron Copland House and was winner of the 2017-2018 Mario Merz Prize for Music. He was a finalist at the 2019 Krzysztof Penderecki International Competition for Young Composers and served a residency at the Visby International Centre for Composers in Sweden. He has been nominated for the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Elise L Stoeger Prize. Complete collections of his works are held in libraries at Harvard University, Northwestern University, National University of Singapore and Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich, among others.
