So Ho-chi is a multimedia composer whose works range from instrumental, vocal, and choral works to electroacoustic composition, field recordings, music theatre, and audiovisuals. Growing up in postcolonial Hong Kong, identity and multiplicity have been recurring themes in his works. Often focusing on re-interpreting and re-contextualizing the sonic and performative materials appropriated, he creates a new form or situation with multiple layers to the sound and performance as a means to question the convention and re-imagining new possibilities of organization of the materials, to evoke questions hidden beneath the convention.
His works have been selected to perform in various music festivals, competitions, and concerts, such as Gaudeamus Muziekweek, ISCM World Music Days 2019, Asian Composers’ League, and Three Choirs Festival. He has collaborated with various orchestras, ensembles, and instrumentalists, including the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Orkest de Ereprijs, Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, New European Ensemble, Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, MAZE ensemble, The Carice Singers, RTHK String Quartet, Michela Amici and Erwan Keravec.
He studied composition and electronic music at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts on a full scholarship from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund and continued his studies at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague with support from the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong Music Scholarship. During his time in The Hague, he collaborated with artists and organizations beyond the music field, including Nederlands Dans Theater and the Academy of Theatre and Dance in Amsterdam.
