So Ho-chi is a multimedia composer whose output ranges from instrumental, vocal and choral works to electroacoustic compositions, field recordings, music theatre and audiovisuals. Growing up in postcolonial Hong Kong, identity and multiplicity have been recurring themes in his works. Often focusing on re-interpreting and re-contextualising the sonic and performative materials appropriated, he creates new forms or situations with multiple layers to the sound and performance as a means to question the convention and re-imagine new possibilities of organisation of the materials, to evoke questions hidden beneath the convention.
So’s works have been performed at various music festivals, competitions and concerts, such as Gaudeamus Muziekweek, International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) World Music Days, Asian Composers League and Three Choirs Festival. He has collaborated with various orchestras, ensembles and instrumentalists including the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Orkest de Ereprijs, Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, New European Ensemble, Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, MAZE, The Carice Singers, RTHK String Quartet, Michela Amici and Erwan Keravec.
So studied Composition and Electronic Music at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts on a full scholarship from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund, and continued his studies at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague with support from the CASH Music Scholarship. During his time in The Hague, he collaborated with artists and organisations beyond the music field, including the Nederlands Dans Theater and Academy of Theatre and Dance in Amsterdam.
