Bass Trombone

Bass Trombonist of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta since 2023/2024 season, Chan Sheung-yin Samson obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in trombone performance from Royal Northern College of Music under the guidance of Robert Holliday and Helen Vollam, and completed the Master of Arts in Performance with distinction and Licentiate Diploma in Teaching at Royal Academy of Music (RAM) under Dudley Bright, Matthew Gee, Peter Moore, and Mark Templeton. He also studied with international visiting professors Ian Bousfield and Jörgen van Rijen during his time at the Academy. Chan received the ABRSM Jardine Matheson, Help Musician UK, and the RAM Scholarship during his studies. He then returned to Hong Kong after being admitted as a visiting student at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts under the tutelage of Zachary Bond, went on winning the concerto competition and making his concerto debut with the Academy Symphony Orchestra.

As an active orchestral performer, Chan has performed frequently with orchestras including Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Hallé Orchestra, Opera North, City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, Macao Orchestra and RAM Academy Symphony Orchestra under the batons of renowned conductors including Sir Mark Elder, Edward Gardner, Vasily Petrenko, Vassily Sinaisky and Robert Trevino. He joined the Asian Youth Orchestra in 2015 & 2017, touring around Asia, the USA and Europe, appearing in KKL Luzern, Konzerthaus Berlin, Smetana Hall (Prague), Tokyo Opera House and so on. He has also appeared at the Berliner Philharmonie with the Deutsch-Skandinavische Jugend-Philharmonie in 2020.
