Hailed by The Australian as a “one-man tour de force”, Rick Lau graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art, Australia in Musical Theatre. His professional theatre credits in Australia include the leading role of The Engineer (first understudy) in Miss Saigon, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Hair the Musical, Box & Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse Tung, The Attack of the Granny Boomers, The Popular Mechanicals, Empress of China, Eureka, Naked Boys Singing!, Elegies for Angels Punks and Raging Queens, the River Skaters, Pacific Overtures, Looney Tunes, Hello Kitty’s Fantastical Adventure and Four x Twenty.
In Hong Kong, Lau has played the leading and principal roles in Our Immortal Cantata and Save the Next Song for Me (Yat Po Singers), A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum and The Underpants (Chung Ying Theatre), The Passage Beyond in Concert and The Amazing Filmphony (Hong Kong Sinfonietta), A Beautiful Day and The Good Person of Szechwan (Actors’ Family), Cabaret des Années Folles (Le French May), Animal Farm (Theatre Noir), June Lovers (Hong Kong Arts Festival), Songs for a New World (Musical Trio), The Pajama Game (Hong Kong 3 Arts Musical Institute), Sleeping Beauty for Children, Cinderella for Children, and Swan Lake for Children (Hong Kong Ballet), Bug Symphony (City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong) and I, Ching (Theatre Space).
As a solo artist, Lau has produced, co-written (with Tony Taylor) and performed in eight sold-out cabaret shows around the world in Australia, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, West End in London, Singapore, Shanghai and Hong Kong: Rick Lau’s Lonely Hearts Club Hour, When Rick Met Marsha…, The 3 Singing Bitches, My Generation, Men In Love, My Queer Valentine, SunRice, I know where I’m going…I think and How Now Rick Lau (commissioned by and premiered at the Sydney Opera House).
