Gábor Boldoczki
Trumpet
Hungarian trumpet virtuoso Gábor Boldoczki is one of the most exceptional trumpet players of his generation.
At the age of 14, he won the First Prize at the National Trumpet Competition of Hungary. Following his studies at the Leó Weiner School of Music, he continued at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest and was a masterclass student under Reinhold Friedrich, before starting his international solo career. A prizewinner at the ARD International Music Competition in 1997, he received the “Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris” at the most distinguished trumpet competition of all – the 3rd Maurice André International Trumpet Competition in Paris.
On European tours, Boldoczki has performed with distinguished orchestras such as the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Mariinsky Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Czech Philharmonic and Vienna Symphony, as well as internationally renowned chamber orchestras. He makes regular guest performances at renowned concert halls such as the Vienna Musikverein, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Berlin Philharmonie, Paris Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, KKL Luzern, Budapest Palace of Arts and the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. Further afield, he has received concert invitations to South America, Japan and China. He has also given gala concerts with Edita Gruberová.
Boldoczki was the first trumpet soloist ever invited to perform the trumpet concertos of Michael Haydn at the Salzburg Festival. Afterwards, the Austrian newspaper Salzburger Nachrichten reviewed: “A softly tongued articulation, the greatest agility, an extremely self-confident embouchure, a coloratura style… a soloist of this quality refines every piece of music.”
In recent years, numerous successful CD albums recorded exclusively with Sony Classical have been published including Tromba Veneziana, Bohemian Rhapsody, Bach, Händel, Purcell: Gloria, Italian Concertos, as well as the trumpet concertos by Haydn and Hummel. For the album Oriental Trumpet Concertos, he was honoured with the ICM Award for Best Contemporary Recording and an ECHO Klassik Award as “Instrumentalist of the Year”.
Boldoczki has long been in demand for contemporary music and their world première performances. He accompanied Gidon Kremer and the Kremerata Baltica for the world première of Georgs Pelēcis’ Revelation at the Les Muséiques festival in Basel. At the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, he premiered László Dubrovay’s Trumpet Concerto, and – as Artist in Residence – Fazıl Say’s Trumpet Concerto. He also gave the world première of Krzysztof Penderecki’s Trumpet Concertino at Musikfestspiele Saar.
Boldoczki holds a Doctor Liberalium Artium (Doctor of Liberal Arts) from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, where he is a professor teaching the trumpet. He was awarded the Franz Liszt Honour Prize by the Hungarian Ministry of Culture, and named Musician of the Year by the Hungarian Academy of Arts.
Boldoczki performs on B&S instruments.
