Jo Hyung-wook
Assistant Principal Double Bass

Born in Seoul, Jo Hyung-wook began his double bass studies when he was 10 years old. He graduated with honours at Yonsei University before becoming the first Korean to be accepted into the double bass course at Hochschule für Künste Bremen, where he studied under Stefan Adelmann (Principal of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra) and performed actively as Principal Double Bass of the Hochschule orchestra.

Jo has performed with renowned musicians such as Yang Wen-Sinn and Jens Lindemann, as well as members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra when they visited Korea. He was a member of the prominent Emeth Ensemble, whose music videos and YouTube performances have garnered worldwide attention, showcasing a diverse repertoire.

Jo has won numerous awards including 1st Prizes at the International Haydn Competition, Korean Music Association Competition (Double Bass Division), Korean Double Bass Association Competition (Chamber Music Division), Korean Chamber Music Society Competition held at the IBK Hall of the Seoul Arts Center, Korean Music Education Newspaper Competition etc.

Jo joined the KBS Symphony Orchestra as a guest member in his early 20s, and became the youngest Korean member of the Seocho Philharmonic Orchestra. He was then scouted for Principal Double Bass of the Seoul Orchestra, as well as Guest Assistant Principal Double Bass with the Cheongju Philharmonic Orchestra.

Jo’s dream is to promote Hong Kong Sinfonietta around the world and buy a house in Hong Kong.
