Liu Tung-bo
Principal Bassoon

Liu Tung-Bo Tommy is currently the Principal Bassoon of Hong Kong Sinfonietta. Before relocating back to Hong Kong, he served as Principal Bassoon in the Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra, Japan. During the 2021/2022 season, he was a member of the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra and was selected by the Director, Yutaka Sado, to perform in the Recital Series of the orchestra.

Liu started learning the bassoon at the age of seven under the tutelage of Cheung On-ki Angel and Au Wai-see. He graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) with first-class honours, majoring in bassoon under the tutelage of Kam Shui. A recipient of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund, he obtained his master’s degree in 2020 at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main, where he studied with Henrik Rabien.

Having been invited to perform as Guest Principal Bassoon with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra and Osaka Symphony Orchestra, Liu has also made guest appearances with the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne and Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra. He was a member of the Asian Youth Orchestra in 2014, and was chosen to perform as soloist with the HKAPA Academy Symphony Orchestra in 2015. In 2016, he was chosen as a representative of HKAPA to participate in a side-by-side project with the Shanghai Orchestra Academy and NDR Symphony Orchestra.

Liu co-founded the chamber ensemble “M•eureka!” and was Chairman of “The Bassoonion” in 2014-2017. In 2015, he was named one of the “Young Music Makers” of Hong Kong by RTHK 4.
